16.04 LTS Cascade Lake Support Statement

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS support extends only to 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors (CPUs) from the Cascade Lake family of Products from Intel. This support requires the use of Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS using the 4.15 HWE kernel ONLY, the GA (4.4) kernel does not include support for Cascade Lake hardware.

No other Cascade Lake features or hardware are supported (including Optane NVDIMM devices) in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

For full support of this hardware, including all features and devices, please consider Ubuntu 18.04 LTS using the GA 4.15 kernel or later.

Purley Platform Support - 16.04 LTS

Purley CPUs and Platforms are not fully supported the 4.4 kernel stream for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. If you are running workloads that require all the features of the Purley CPU instruction set, you will need to update to kernel version 4.10 or later, which is provided by the 'linux-generic-hwe-16.04' package or the 'xenial (hwe-16.04)' kernel option in MAAS.
